{ Welcome }

This March, we feature four hearty reds: our 2007 Cabernet Franc from Paso Robles, the Calleri Vineyard Negrette from San Benito County and two 2009 vintage wines from the Enz Vineyard of Lime Kiln Valley, a substantial Pinot Noir and proprietary tribute wine we call the Zen of Enz.

March 2013 Shipment

Pruning old vine Zinfandel at the Enz Vineyard in Lime Kiln Valley

We made it through the Mayan Apocalypse and have come through the mini ice age of the past several weeks in good shape. The 2012 harvest is proving to be a great vintage with the wines showing very well at this point in time. We are planning a barrel tasting event for our Cellar Door Club members on February 23 to show you the fruits of our labor. Review our upcoming events section for more information.

A major change for KVV is that we have transitioned to a winery direct model for our wholesale business in California. Tim Gabriel has joined the KVV team in the position as California Sales Director. Tim, a longtime friend of Ken, brings decades of sales and marketing experience to the winery. We look forward to developing a closer relationship with our retailers and restaurateurs here in the Golden State.

2007 Cabernet Franc — Paso Robles

Full Retail $36.00 / Club $28.80

Our last release from the fabulous 2007 vintage is a blend of fruit from Starr Ranch Vineyards and Carmody McKnight Vineyards on the west side of Paso Robles. The wine world would be very different without Cabernet Franc, a varietal believed to be of Spanish origin and a known parent to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carménère and several other grape varieties. Our 2007 Cabernet Franc—a deeply-colored purple wine—presents aromas of cedar, graphite and dark red and black fruits. On the palate, the flavors of cassis, blueberry and plum are followed by fine-grain tannins. This wine is big without being overly extracted. We’ve paired this wine with a delicious Steak au Poivre recipe courtesy of Julia Child and Jacques Pépin from Julia and Jacques Cooking at Home (1999).

2010 Negrette, Calleri Vineyard — San Benito County

Full Retail $28.00 / Club $22.40

Negrette, one of Kenneth Volk's most popular heirloom varieties, is an extremely rare grape variety in California that has aromas and flavors presenting similarities to both Pinot Noir and Syrah. The 2009 vintage sold out very quickly and we’ve been out of stock for six months so we are glad to offer this wine once again. Our 2010 Negrette has aromas of hummingbird sage and turned earth with flavors of blackberry, cranberry, and blueberry and a creamy finish. This wine may be enjoyed on its own or can complement a range of dishes. This wine pairs well with venison, duck confit, pork roast and other savory cuisines. We have paired this wine with a great recipe by Keith Floyd as well as a video for making the southern France dish, Toulouse Cassoulet.

2009 Pinot Noir, Enz Vineyard — Lime Kiln Valley

Full Retail $48.00 / Club $38.40

A big Pinot Noir from the calcareous soils of Lime Kiln Valley, our 2009 Enz Vineyard Pinot Noir is a substantial, ruby-colored wine with a complex array of aromas of ripe red and black fruits as well as rose oil and wet slate. Rich flavors of currant, raspberry, blackberry, and blueberry are followed by soft tannins on its finish. This wine can complement a wide range of cuisines. We recommend pairing this wine with duck and a lovely Pinot Noir Sauce from Tricia Volk and Mary Tartaglione's classic cookbook Signature Dishes: Wine and Food of California’s Central Coast Wineries (1994).

2009 Zen of Enz, Enz Vineyard — Lime Kiln Valley

Full Retail $36.00 / Club $28.80

The Zen of Enz bottling was created specifically for our Cellar Door Club to honor the unique location and vines of the Enz Vineyard of Lime Kiln Valley. It was Ken’s desire to craft a wine which would express the essence of the Enz Vineyard from the superior growing season of 2009. The Zen of Enz is a medium-bodied red wine with aromas of Bing cherry and lavender and, on the palate, flavors of black and red fruits with dusty, lingering tannins. Consider pairing it with this recipe for Braised Lamb Shank and Barley Risotto by Chef Joachim Splichal whose recipe appears in Julia Child’s In Julia’s Kitchen with Master Chefs (1995).
