{ Welcome }

Our September 2014 Cellar Door Club shipment features wines from our northern-most vineyard sources including three interesting reds—Grenache, Zinfandel, and Mourvèdre—as well as one lovely white, a Malvasia Bianca.

November 2013 Shipment

The harvest of 2014 is rapidly approaching and is likely to be in full stride by the time our September Cellar Door Club is shipped. In this club shipment, we feature four wines from our furthest north vineyard sources. We’ve included a multi-vintage Grenache from the Rio San Benito Vineyard, a 2011 vintage Zinfandel and Mourvèdre from the iconic Enz Vineyard of Lime Kiln Valley, and a 2013 Malvasia Bianca from the San Bernabe Vineyard of Monterey.

The early vintage this year stems directly from the ongoing three-year drought and the historic high temperatures we experienced on the Central Coast this past May. On May 1, the National Weather Service raised the drought status of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties from “extreme” to “exceptional” drought conditions. What little rain we received in early March turned the hills green but quickly dried out to a golden hue by mid-May. The perigean full moons—also known as “super moons”—of July, August and September will have a profound impact accelerating grape vine maturity as the moon orbit comes closest to earth.

On July 10, 2014, the International Research Institute of Climate Prediction declared a 70% chance of El Niño in the summer of 2014 in the northern hemisphere and 80% chance for the coming winter. For the past three decades, three-year drought periods have been followed by an above-average rainfall year. Not all El Niño weather patterns will result in above average rainfall, but the wettest seasons on the Central Coast in the past 50 years have occurred during El Niño conditions. Let’s pray for rain—just not until the 2014 vintage is complete.

2011 Zinfandel — Enz Vineyard, Lime Kiln Valley

Full Retail $36.00 / Club $28.80

This delicious wine was recently awarded a gold medal at the Sunset International Wine Competition. Our 2011 Zinfandel has very ripe, jammy flavors, somewhat atypical of the KVV style of Zinfandel. The wine has aromas and flavors of ripe blackberry and raspberry. On the palate, it has firm tannins and moderate astringency. This wine pairs well with grilled meats and vegetables, duck, lamb, and hearty red-sauced pastas.

2011 Mourvèdre — Enz Vineyard, Lime Kiln Valley

Full Retail $36.00 / Club $28.80

This wine is very earth toned and has aromas and fruit flavors of marionberry and mulberry. Try it with beef short ribs, pork shoulder, barbecued meat and veggies, or this recipe for Bobby Flay’s lamb chops with jalapeño preserves.

2013 Malvasia Bianca — San Bernabe Vineyard, Monterey

Full Retail $24.00 / Club $19.20

This wine was awarded a gold medal at this year’s Orange County Fair Wine Competition and Central Coast Wine Competition. Ken has produced Malvasia Bianca in a variety of styles but he has concentrated on producing it in a highly aromatic dry, table-wine style. This wine has aromas of jasmine and citrus blossom and ripe lychee nut. On the palate, the wine has a rich mouthfeel, with tropical fruit flavors supported by clean acidity.
